The Department of Chemical Engineering (ChE) at the University of Waterloo invites applications from qualified candidates for a 12 month postdoctoral fellowship appointment in Optimal Operation of Emerging Energy and intensified Systems under the supervision of Professors Luis Ricardez-Sandoval.

The aim of this project is to perform optimal integration of advanced energy and CO2 capture systems applying process intensification principles. The candidates for this position must have solid expertise in computer programming, chemical process optimization, process control, and first-principles modelling of chemical systems. In particular, the candidate must have expertise in solving nonlinear dynamic optimization problems using state-of-the-art optimization software. A Ph.D. degree and evidence of excellence in research are required. Successful applicants are expected to maintain an active program of research in areas closely related to optimal process integration of energy and chemical systems. Applications should include a cover letter describing their interest in the position and the candidate’s background in the areas, a curriculum vitae and research statement and at least three reference letters.

There is no deadline to apply to this position and candidates will be evaluated until the position is filled. The selected candidate is expected to start working on the project at their earliest convenience. Interested individuals should send their application to Luis Ricardez-Sandoval (laricard@uwaterloo.ca). The salary for this position will be similar to that offered by the NSERC postdoctoral fellowship program and commensurable with the background and activities to be developed by the applicant. Only applicants that fit the profile outlined above for this position will be contacted.

The University of Waterloo regards diversity as an integral part of academic excellence and is committed to employment equity and accessibility for all employees. As such, we encourage applications from women, Indigenous (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) peoples, persons with disabilities, members of diverse gender identities, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas. At Waterloo, you will have the opportunity to work across disciplines and collaborate with an international community of scholars and a diverse student body, situated in a rapidly growing community that has been termed a “hub of innovation”.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computer-Aided Materials Design at the University of Waterloo

The Department of Chemical Engineering (ChE) at the University of Waterloo invites applications from qualified candidates for a 12 month postdoctoral fellowship appointment in Computer-Aided materials design under the supervision of Professors Luis Ricardez-Sandoval and Eric Croiset.

The project involves a research collaboration with a multinational industrial partner in the Oil & Gas sector interested to evaluate the performance of new process using microkinetic modelling principles. The candidates for this position must have solid expertise in computer programming, chemical reaction engineering and heterogeneous catalysis, demonstrated expertise in microkinetic modelling of chemical reactions, in particular using Kinetic Monte Carlo methods, and first-principles calculations using off-the-shelf software such as VASP. A Ph.D. degree and evidence of excellence in research are required. Successful applicants are expected to maintain an active program of research in areas closely related to computer-aided materials design.

Interested individuals should send their application to Luis Ricardez-Sandoval (laricard@uwaterloo.ca) and Eric Croiset (ecroiset@uwaterloo.ca). The salary for this position will be similar to that offered by the NSERC postdoctoral fellowship program and commensurable with the background and activities to be developed by the applicant. Only applicants that fit the profile outlined above for this position will be contacted.

PhD Position in Liquid Hydrogen Technologies at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology

Prof. Thomas A. Adams II in the Process and Power Program, Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is seeking a PhD Candidate in Sustainable Energy Process Systems. One of the key goals is to identify the most promising technologies for implementation as part of a new Trans-Atlantic Energy Bridge to provide new sources of clean and reliable energy to Europe, and subsequently make recommendations to governments for development based on critical analysis and data.

The research will require the use of eco-technoeconomic analysis (eTEA) methodologies to evaluate candidate energy production, conversion, storage, and transportation processes and systems to quantify their potential economic, environmental, or sociopolitical value of various technologies in comparison to alternative solutions. Key research elements will include the conceptual design, synthesis, and simulation of candidate commercial scale production and/or storage processes currently at technology readiness level 6 or lower; bottom-up economic analyses to estimate costs as a function of geography and markets; dynamic life cycle assessment (LCA) of commercial supply chain implementation; optimal design under uncertainty techniques, and big-picture assessments made within the context of the triple bottom line of sustainability. The development and application of applicable standards, especially concerning comparative eTEAs, will also play an important role.

Since the scope of the Trans-Atlantic Energy Bridge is broad, the candidate will be expected to narrow their focus to the most promising technologies and suggest innovative new solutions using chemical engineering approaches.

It is also an exciting opportunity to work with an elite team of researchers who are tackling the most relevant and urgent problems in sustainable energy systems. The EPT department contains a diverse range of expertise in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, energy systems engineering, process engineering, industrial ecology, industrial economics, life cycle assessment, and other specialties. We are looking for someone to join our team and contribute their expertise to high-impact research that has the potential to change our world for the better.

To see how this position fits into the research objectives of Prof. Adams’ program, read the article at https://doi.org/10.1002/cjce.24787
